Small Changes Add Up to Big Health Benefits

We've all heard it: Lose weight, exercise and eat right to stay healthy. We often think we have to deprive ourselves, become gym rats or run a marathon to improve our physical condition.

The truth is that even small changes in lifestyle can lead to significant health benefits. If you've had weight loss surgery, part of your post-operative prescription will be for 30 minutes of daily, moderate activity. While your diet will change, you can still enjoy a variety of tasty foods.

Patients typically lose a lot of weight after gastric bypass, gastric sleeve or one of the other bariatric procedures. As you lose, many of your obesity-related conditions will improve. 

Type two diabetes, for example, may resolve. High blood pressure, arthritis pain and high cholesterol also improve in many patients.

A 15-year study that followed people who had weight loss surgery also suggests that those who opted for surgery decreased their risk of heart attack, stroke and death.

Losing as little as five percent of weight can lead to improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. 

Here are some ideas for the small changes you can make to improve your health:

1. Aim for 30 Minutes of Exercise Daily

Moderate activity reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. Exercise also helps you maintain weight loss. But, the benefits go beyond the physical. Staying active helps you chase away the blues and burn off stress. 

After surgery, your exercise physiologist will work with you. A mix of cardio, strength and stretching will keep your workout routine in balance. If you can't find half an hour every day, aim for two sessions of 15 minutes.

2. Set Small, Attainable Weight-Loss Goals

Some bariatric patients find losing weight is effortless after surgery. Others have to work harder. It's common to lose quickly at first before tapering off. Whether your weight loss is easy or hard, set intermediate goals along the way to your final goal. Take time to celebrate and acknowledge each step along the way. 

3. Eat Small Meals

Admittedly, the change to your diet after surgery will be big, not small. However, having weight loss surgery doesn't mean you need to eat an extreme diet. Once your digestive tract adjusts, you can eat a delicious variety of healthful foods. Your meals need to be small, and you'll need to take care to get the nutrition you need to thrive.
