Thanks for the blog about the tax break and clip from the Today Show. I'm seriously obese and have tried numerous diet plans, pills, exercise programs blah blah blah only to succeed for a short time and fail. I'm frustrated to the point of eating the rest of my life away because I'm so unhappy with my appearance and failing health. I've worked all of my life and have a job that's very physically demanding that I love but am having problems performing because of my morbid obesity. I feel like I look pathetic and I am miserable most of the time because of the weight I lug around. It's much easier to sit in front of the television and eat than move. With all of this said, I attended the one of the weight loss seminars on the lap band. Let me start off by saying that I have actually followed the progression of weight loss surgery from the SRVG, Silastic Ring Vertical Gastroplasty when I was in nursing school and later worked directly with patients pre and post operatively. I looked into the procedure extensively and then heard about the lap band, which was only being tested at that time. I continued to watch the progress of the lap band throughout the years and have spoken to numerous surgeons about the pros and cons. With all of this said, I had decided to move ahead with the lap banding but there's one glitch. My insurance doesn't cover any weight loss procedures and I simpy cannot afford to finance the procedure having just put two children through school myself. I find it a travesy that even the government is getting involved in the obesity condition of the USA and the president is all about insurance for everyone but those of us who are really suffering and have been living a productive life, except for our fatness can't get the one thing we really need....the chance to be able to afford this surgery and have it covered by our insurance. It really seems that this is judgement call from insurance companies. Since I am a fat person, I must be lazy and worthless and therefore am not worthy of the chance to lose the weight and be the person I would love to be. They have no idea how hard FAT PEOPLE work at trying not to be. I'm the girl who used to watch my portions, didn't eat much in the way of processed food, exercises regularly and maintained a very active life while I watched some of my peers eat nonstop and never gain a pound. Basically, I've given up on life. I don't have the energy to continue this journey and quite frankly I am so tired of being in pain all of the time. I might as well eat and enjoy the rest of my life because when it comes down to it...it's never going to change. So, in conclusion, the tax break thing is a great idea for those of you who can afford to do the surgery in the first place or you're fortunate enough to have an insurance co. who isn't as discriminating against FAT PEOPLE. The rest of us....have a bag of Doritos and slowly slide into our super sized graves.
