Understanding the Purpose of Body Fat

Fat. It’s a frequently discussed topic when it comes to dieting and healthy eating. Most of the time it comes with a negative association.

Many people struggle to rid themselves of excess weight and fat. Exercise goes a long way toward burning energy stored as fat and displacing fat with muscle. Diet, however, is the biggest factor in losing weight.

Weight loss surgery is the most effective means for the morbidly obese to permanently lose weight. Post-surgery, patients lose weight rapidly and they maintain their weight by eating very small portions and working out every day.

Not all fat is bad. Fat has a purpose and can play helpful roles in the body. The primary role of fat is to store extra energy that you can use when you need it, such as when you're hungry or during endurance exercise. Fat also releases vital hormones that help control and maintain your body’s metabolism.

There are different types of body fat and here are some of their essential functions.

White and brown fat:

White fat has the primary function of storing energy and producing hormones that are released and sent into the body’s bloodstream. There are small cells in the fat that produce a hormone called adiponectin, which is an essential protein for the body that helps develop muscle and make liver sensitive to insulin. Brown fat has been labeled as a fat with very little function to it.

But, it does in fact have one main role that is very important: keeping the body warm. More often than not, children will have more brown fat than the average adult. Recent studies have shown that people who are healthy and not overweight have more brown fat.

A chart with different portions of body fatVisceral fat:

This fat can be extremely unhealthy because it wraps around the inside of the body’s organs and could cause a lot of different health problems. If you hold a lot of your extra weight in your stomach or waist, it’s likely that this visceral fat could put you at greater risk for developing diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and more. Visceral fat has also been named as a key player in insulin resistance, which has been linked to diabetes.

Subcutaneous fat:

This is the fat found directly underneath the skin, and it's what medical professionals use when they estimate your body’s overall body fat. This fat is most commonly seen around the buttocks, thighs, and abdomens.

Belly fat:

Fat around your abdominal area is generally unhealthy and is made up of a combination of subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Excess belly fat is thought to contribute to the development of heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
