Weight loss surgery for teens: Why Lap Band is best

While adults have been able to receive Lap Band surgery since the turn of the century, teens have had far fewer options for tackling excess weight problems.  Because the long-term effects of bariatric surgery on younger patients have not been fully studied, adolescents have had to rely primarily on non-surgical methods of weight loss. However, since 2003, Northwest Weight Loss surgery has offered Lap Band surgery to adolescents who meet the proper requirements.

Lap Band surgery for teens: What to expect

During an initial consultation, the prospective patient will meet with an integrated medical team to complete a physical exam, nutritional assessment and a psychiatrist’s evaluation. In addition to a team of doctors and surgeons, teens receiving bariatric surgery require a strong family support system to ensure success in weight loss.

The surgeon will make several small incisions into the abdomen during the procedure. An adjustable silicone band is then placed and secured around the upper stomach to create a small pouch. Once placed, tubing then connects the band to an access port that allows doctors to tighten or loosen the band, effectively the adjusting the rate of weight loss based on the patient’s individual needs.

After recovering from surgery, patients will feel full sooner after eating, reduce their calorie intake and gradually lose excess weight. The Lap Band is the only adjustable weight-loss surgery in the U.S. to not only lose weight, but also keep it off long term.

Is gastric bypass surgery an option for teens?

Due to a greater risk of adverse side effects and other health dangers, Northwest Weight Loss Surgery does not perform gastric bypass surgery on teens. Gastric bypass is a far more invasive surgery than Lap Band, requiring longer recovery times with higher risks of potentially deadly complications. Below is a quick list of why Lap Band surgery is considered to be much safer for adolescents:

·        Short-term mortality rates 10x lower than those of gastric bypass

·        Lower risk of hair loss

·        Lower risk of nutritional deficiencies

·        No “dumping syndrome”

Northwest Weight Loss Surgery is committed to giving you the tools you need to be successful in your weight loss journey. If you’re considering Lap Band surgery, or have general questions about weight loss, give us a call and speak to one our medical professionals today.
