Weight loss surgery: Tips for summertime travel

stocksnap_v3fcaaumln.jpgSummertime. Glorious, wonderful summertime is particularly advantageous in the Pacific Northwest with a host of outdoor activities where we can enjoy activity under the sun and surrounded by beautiful landscapes. While summer destinations are always something to look forward to, you may not be excited about the extensive traveling. If you have a gastric band and are wondering how to travel comfortably, take a look at these helpful tips of how to enjoy travelling on your weight loss journey.

How to prepare for road trips

One of the greatest pleasures of summer is arguably road trips. Wind in your hair, traveling somewhere new with your friends or family – there’s nothing quite like it. However, you’ll need to prepare a little more ahead of the trip to ensure that you’re meeting nutritional and hydration needs. In addition, car rides can be long, and spending long swaths of time sitting in a car would make anyone uncomfortable.

Pack a cooler:  Coolers are a great idea for whether you’ve got a long car ride ahead of you or are planning on staying overnight in a hotel. Keep in mind that some accommodations won’t have a refrigerator in the room, so bringing a cooler with you can avoid a lukewarm food situation in your hotel room. Here are some things you may want to pack in your cooler:

  • Low-fat cheese and healthy crackers
  • Lean deli-meats and light string cheese
  • Nonfat Greek yogurt
  • Fresh fruit and berries

Get up and move when you can: Sitting in a car for hours on end isn’t fun for anyone. Plus, it’s not good for you to be motionless for so long. During pit stops and other driving breaks, get outside and walk around for 15 to 20 minutes. This will help break the drive up and give you a chance to stretch your muscles periodically throughout the day.

Grocery shop when you arrive: Vacationing in a new place can make sticking to your diet more difficult, so after the drive, it’s time to hit the supermarket. Buy food and supplies for the upcoming week that adhere to your weight loss surgeon’s dietary guidelines.

Adjust your diet for long plane rides

Fly me to the moon! Or at least somewhere warm for the summer. Plane rides are often an integral part of summertime. Those with gastric bands may notice changes in the sensation of their bands when taking off. The changes in air pressure can cause air in the band to expand and may make for an unpleasant flight, depending on how tight the band originally was before takeoff. The good news is that you’re not at risk of rupturing your band when flying.

To deal with the potential discomfort of a band made tighter by air pressure, nutritional experts recommend that you alter your diet based on the days you’ll be in the air:

Day of flying: It’s best to consume a liquid diet during flying days. To make it through security, pack protein powder in small zip lock bags that you can later mix with water before getting on the plane.

Day after flight: You can safely resume eating, but do so slowly and remember to chew your food thoroughly before swallowing.
