How to Choose a Weight Loss Surgeon

Once you have decided that weight loss surgery is right for you, you will then need to select a facility and surgeon. Don't be afraid to ask questions before choosing a lap-band® surgeon. The following list provides a good starting point for questions we would encourage you to ask of any surgeon you are considering:

  • Are you a Baratric(weight loss surgery) specialist, or do you perform other types of surgery?
  • How long having you been performing weight loss surgery procedures and how many have you done?
  • How many papers have you published on weight loss surgery?
  • How do you determine who is a good candidate for this surgery/ how do you screen patients?
  • Do you have weight loss surgery patients working in your office? Or is there a Patient Support Line I can call to talk with other weight loss surgery patients?
  • Do you have an online support group that is monitored by the medical staff? Do you ever attend?
  • May I attend one of your support groups prior to surgery? Is there a program fee?
  • What is the charge for band adjustments and who preforms them?
  • What's your past experience with weight loss surgery? Your complication rate? Your conversion rate to an open incision?
  • What do I need to do in order to see success with this program?
  • What is included in the cost? (Look for hidden fees, band adjustments, fluoroscopy, anesthesia, program fees for support groups, etc.)
  • Do you have insurance coordinators available to help me with insurance questions?
  • Is a seminar required or can you provide me with the information I need privately?

Before Surgery

Having weight loss surgery may be the most important medical decision you may ever make.  This is a very personal decision. Northwest Weight Loss Surgery provides you with education and support while you are researching your options for obesity treatment. Once you have decided to move forward you will need to schedule the following pre-operative appointments:

  • 90 minute consultation with our nursing staff - At this patient education appointment you will gain a better understanding of what life will be like after surgery. Our nurses will discuss the changes that are necessary after gastric banding surgery. * All of our nurses have gastric bands and have lost weight successfully.
  • 60 minute psychological evaluation - At this appointment your therapist will assist you in getting mentally prepared for your new life. You may want to start a journal to record how you feel right now, the challenges that you face, and the things you hope to be able to do after surgery. Write about your reasons for having weight loss surgery and outline a plan to maintain your progress.
  • 60 minute consultation with your surgeon - At this appointment your surgeon will review your medical history and provide you with a better understanding of the surgical process. (You may be asked to have some additional medical testing.)

We also encourage you to participate in our support groups. The group setting is helpful as you can talk to other people who have had the procedure and discuss your concerns. In order to ensure your best outcome you may choose to enlist the support of family and friends as it helps to know you have people behind you, waiting to help.

Pre-op Supervised Diet

Some of our patients are asked to lose 10-30 pounds just before their weight loss surgery. Losing ten pounds before surgery will shrink your liver, decrease surgery time, lower risks and decrease bleeding. It often helps to use a medically supervised diet such as Bariatric Advantage® liquid shakes. We do offer a selection Bariatric Advantage® products at a discount in our clinic. Our patients can also order undiscounted products directly from Bariatric Advantage®. You will also find an array of products that we do not have room to stock at the clinic.

The Day of Surgery

Typically Lap Band® and Greater Curvature Plication Surgery are done as a day surgery. On average people spend about 4 hours at our surgery center on the day of surgery. You will need an adult to drive you here, take you home and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery. We ask that you arrive at our facility about an hour before your surgery time. The lap band surgery generally takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass Surgery typically require a one to three day hospital stay. Your family is welcome to stay with you before and after surgery.

After Surgery

Most people are able to return to work within three to seven days. Many people stop taking pain medication after three days. The post-operative healing phase consists of one week of liquids and one to two weeks of soft, mushy food. No adjustments are made to the gastric band during this time. This allows the band to heal into the perfect spot, minimizing the chance for slippage. The first adjustment may be done around four weeks after surgery.

If you are eating small amounts of food and are not hungry between meals and are losing 1 to 2 pounds per week, then you don't need an adjustment. If you can eat large meals, are struggling with hunger and not losing weight, please make an appointment to see if a Lapband® adjustment is needed. Most patients require several adjustments during the first 12 months.

Vitamins & Activity

You need to take a daily multi-vitamin. A multi-vitamin will do, but keep in mind that it will be hard to take large pills. Some patients prefer liquid adult vitamins, chewable adult vitamins or breaking regular vitamins in half. We offer a complete line of Bariatric Advantage® dietary supplements and vitamins specially formulated for Weight Loss Surgery patients.

It is a good idea to try to get in some walking or other physical exercise every day. Start out slowly and build up gradually. A simple walking program is a good place to start if you have not been physically active before surgery. Start out walking for 5 or 10 minutes and build gradually to 30 minutes per day. You can begin exercising moderately after a week or 10 days. There are no restrictions on lifting, but take it easy for a week or two or you will cause more pain in the incisions. Typically the port incision is the most tender because the port is stitched to the muscle. This pain will resolve with time.

You can resume sexual activity in 3 to 5 days or whenever you feel ready. Showers are okay. Do not rub the bandages vigorously with a washcloth. Blot the bandages dry with a towel after a shower. No underwater submersion of the incisions or swimming for two weeks. Sitting in the tub with the incisions above water is okay. We will give you more information about becoming physically active after lap band® surgery at the support group meetings.
